It was a gorgeous autumn evening on Greene Avenue last Saturday when the Sayville Golden Flashes hosted the Westhampton Beach Tornadoes for a varsity football face-off between two longtime combatants in Suffolk Division III.

The Flashes offensive juggernaut ignited early after a long drive in the first quarter that culminated in a touchdown. Tomas McCann and Kyle Messina reeled in passes to move the ball into their opponent’s territory.

Then on 4th and 10, Patrick Coan found Luke Neugebauer for a first down to move the chains to the 14-yard line. Messina made the first down pickup on 3rd and 1 then on the next play, Coan found Donovan Bartolotta in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown, and after the ensuing extra point by Nick Watson it was 7-0 with 4:32 to go in the first period. In the second frame, Coan threw a laser to Dylan Kent for 18 yards and six points, then followed by another Watson extra point, and it was 14-0 Sayville with 8:24 left in the second.

On the defensive side of the ball, Kyle Messina recovered a fumble and darted all the way to the end zone to put his team up by three possessions with 8:03 remaining till halftime. It was Golden Flashes 21, Hurricanes 3 at the half.

Sayville added to their offensive pillage with three more touchdowns in the third quarter and on the last one, Dylan Kent snared a pass from Coan and galloped his way 42 yards all the way to the end zone, and after the ensuing successful PAT (point after touchdown) by Watson, the Golden Flashes were sparkling up 42-3 with 52 seconds left in the triadic frame. In the fourth quarter, Tristan Vitale darted 15 yards for a score and it was 49-10 with just under six minutes to go.
