Blessing of the animals

Posted

St. John’s Episcopalian Church in Oakdale hosted an animal blessing on Saturday, Oct. 5.

The ceremony was performed by Mother Bernadette, an Episcopal priest and animal lover.

Among the special guests of the day was Duke, a 10-year-old Chihuahua mix looking for his forever home and who is currently at Carol’s Senior Sanctuary in Sayville.

Mother Bernadette even blessed a snail!

“Every blessed animal got an individual blessing as well as a St. Francis medal for their collar.  Those that were unable to come due to fragile status or fear had their pictures blessed.  It was a great day!” said Maryann Almes, president of the Oakdale Historical Society.

St. John’s, a national historical landmark that dates back to colonial days, is a functioning church and has services at 11:30 a.m. the first three Sundays of each month.
