Third annual Run to the Pump

The annual Run to The Pump 5K Run, Walk and Hangout in Brightwaters returned on Saturday, July 20.

Proceeds raised from the event benefit the members of the Bay Shore Engine Company No. 1. The volunteer, not-for-profit community fire service has provided fire prevention and suppression to the Bay Shore and Brightwaters area since 1891.

The enthusiastic participants began the 5K at 9 a.m. at Walker Beach and raced through scenic Brightwaters, looping back to the finish line, where a Bay Shore fire truck sprayed refreshing water to cool participants down.

Also awaiting each participant upon completion of the race was a free, refreshing, ice-cold beer, courtesy of Sand City Brewing Co.

Truly a “Hangout” event—not just a race—refreshments and raffles were available to race participants and attendees alike as they mingled with members of the Bay Shore Fire Department. Free food fueled participants after the race, including bagels, granola bars, protein bars, and fruit. Also among the free refreshments were cans of C4 pre-workout, which energized participants before they took off on the 5K race.

“This was by far the best year yet, with a total of 303 runners. We have received a lot of compliments from those in attendance,” shared Bay Shore Fire Department Captain John Scollo. “A special thanks to Good Samaritan University Hospital for being the title sponsor for 3 consecutive years, as well as the Village of Brightwaters and Mayor Valdini. We owe a large part of our success to them as well as all the other sponsors.”

With the fourth annual Run to the Pump planned for July 2025, the Bay Shore Fire Department is excited to see what next year brings.
