Memorial Day, a federal holiday that falls on Monday, May 27 this year, is a somber day to honor those fallen heroes who died while serving our country. Many towns, villages, and organizations in the area will be holding ceremonies and parades to pay homage to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Below is a compiled list of events to attend in the area this year.

Bay Shore-Brightwaters Memorial Day Parade

Monday, May 27, at 10 a.m.

The Bay Shore-Brightwaters Memorial Day Parade is hosted by Amvets Post 76, in Bay Shore. Attendees will come together to show their patriotism by having a parade in honor of the departed veterans from our community. The day will begin with veterans’ services at 9 a.m. at Memorial Park/Bay Shore train station. The parade step-off will commence at 10 a.m., at Lanier Lane and Main Street, and proceed down Main Street to Brentwood Road and on to Oakwood Cemetery.

Islip Hamlet Memorial Day Parade

Monday, May 27, at 10 a.m.

The Islip Hamlet Memorial Day Parade is once again hosted by American Legion Rusy-Bohm Post 411. The parade will start at 11 a.m., at the south side of Main Street and Saxon Avenue, and proceed down Main Street to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Brightwaters Memorial Day Weekend Ceremony

Saturday, May 25, 10 a.m.

The Village of Brightwaters will be hosting their annual Memorial Day Weekend Ceremony at the top of the canal at Ackerson Plaza in Brightwaters, where the veterans memorial walkway is located. The walkway is paved with bricks inscribed with the names of veterans, living and deceased. The ceremony, complete with speeches and bagpipe music, will honor our veterans and express gratitude to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Memorial Day Wood Sign Paint Night

Tuesday, May 21, at 6:30 p.m.

Paint Party LI will be hosting a Memorial Day Wood Sign Paint Night at The Harp & Hound, located at 528 Main Street in Islip. Paint your own sign right in time to express your patriotism on Memorial Day. Spots cost $38 to $55 per person, which includes wood, paint, stencil and decals, and instruction. A food / beverage purchase is required. Register for the paint night at  www.paintpartyli.com/calendar.

Islip High School Veterans Walk-A-Thon

Tuesday, May 21, at 2:30 p.m.

Islip High School students will participate in a Veterans Walk-A-Thon from Islip High School to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, located at 401 Main Street, to present a check to go toward homeless veterans’ programs and Honor Flights. The students will leave from the administration building at 2:30 p.m., arriving at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial by 2:40, p.m. where the students will present the check and say a few words before returning to school.
