Photography collection brings memories in the moments

Toast in Patchogue will be featuring photographer Dan Lachacz’s collection, “The World in your Hallway,” until Wednesday, April 12.

With a sensibility to the individual, cinematic perspective, Lachacz’s collection is equal parts observer and commentator, but always leaving the final interpretation to the viewer.
“I like to let the audience feel what it was like in that moment,” said Lachacz of what his method is behind the lens.

The collection covers a span of 10 years with places such as Easter Island, Spain, Istanbul, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Vienna, Miami, London, Massachusetts, Germany, Romania, Hungary, Iceland, and Prague.

According to Lachacz, each piece is meant to be of an individual moment and feeling—curated to his eyes, but open enough for another’s gaze.

“It’s not just a memory, but a feeling,” said Lachacz. “It’s not meant to be a travel catalogue of photos.”

With the majority of scenes taken from eye or ground level, Lachacz said he felt that it was in keeping with natural views as opposed to drone photographs, which can feel “unnatural.”

The perspective is to ground the viewer in the moment as if they are actually “sitting in it.”

“Mine are more like a walk around and be in the moment,” said Lachacz.

Emotive in their nature, Lachacz’s work draws out deep feelings that vary from tranquility to restlessness, euphoria to aggression, and oneness to isolation.

“Sometimes you take 1,000 photos and they’re all terrible,” said Lachacz, “but you have to find the right one.”

A reception will be held at 7 p.m. at Toast’s Long Hall Gallery the last night of the viewing on April 12.
