On Sunday, Aug. 25, the Moriches Community Center hosted a heartfelt memorial fundraiser in celebration of the life and legacy of Kathleen A. Johnson, a beloved co-founder, executive director, and president of the center.
Johnson, who died earlier this year, was a dedicated community leader and a passionate advocate for the arts, youth, and those in need, leaving an enduring impact on numerous individuals and the community as a whole.
The event featured an art auction with works by Johnson and other local artists, with all proceeds benefiting the Moriches Community Center—a nonprofit organization that was very dear to Johnson’s heart. In addition, note cards showcasing Johnson’s artwork were available for purchase.
Attendees enjoyed live music performed by our Folkie Fest friends, as well as Jackie and Jimmy Osborne. Nettie’s Bakery generously donated a variety of treats, which were enjoyed by all.
Two benches were installed on the property, one in remembrance for Johnson, and the other in memory of Anthony Parlato, the other co-founder of the Moriches Community Center, who tragically died in 2013.
The building the Moriches Community Center calls home at the Town of Brookhaven’s Moriches Rec Center was rightly named after Johnson, and the athletic field behind it named after Parlato.
The fundraiser was organized by a committee including Kathleen’s husband, Michael Ushko; her daughter, Emily Ushko; close friend Chris Cohen; and several members of the community center’s board and also close friends: Michael Valentine (president), Lisa Sanders (treasurer), Anthony Eaderesto, Mary Fogarty, and Miriam Gillies, with the help of many other close friends and relatives of Johnson.
The event brought the community together to honor Johnson’s remarkable contributions. Her vision and dedication helped shape the Moriches Community Center into the vibrant hub it is today, and her legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
The Moriches Community Center extends its deepest gratitude to everyone who participated and supported this event, ensuring that Johnson’s passion for art and community service will live on.
