The West Sayville Junior Fire Department helped with landscaping and cleanup at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Oakdale earlier this month.
Oakdale Historical Society president Maryann Almes said that when the organization and the church put out a call for help, the Junior Firefighters “[…] descended like angels from the heavens!” and called the organization, “amazing.”
Under the direction of Melissa McManus, the junior firefighters arrived one evening with rakes, clippers, mowers and edgers, as well as “an eagerness to work,” according to Almes.
“We can’t say enough how much this means to St. John’s and the Oakdale community. They embody the spirit of giving and their dedication to their community is laudable,” said Almes.
The volunteers were characterized as having insightful questions and responding well to guidelines, especially given the historical significance of the building and grounds.
“In a world where OHS so often reports of the vandalism, disdain for authority, and disrespect of our history; these young people provide a refreshing look at the future of our world. I only wish that the spirit of community was more prominently figured in all of our young people,” said Almes.
