The William Floyd High School girls basketball program has dedicated time off the court to help in the fight against cancer. Student-athletes from both the varsity and junior varsity teams recently came together to help raise over $1200 in the Score for a Cure/Coaches Versus Cancer fundraiser to benefit the American Cancer Society.
The student-athletes hosted a bake sale, sold T-shirts, and held a team “shoot-a-thon” to collect donations from family and friends to help raise money, according to Rich Sinclair, head coach, girls varsity basketball.
“I would like to thank the players, their families and friends for their help and generosity with fundraising for the American Cancer Society,” said Sinclair.
As for on the court, the girls varsity team is having a great season. The Colonials own a 7-1 league record (8-4 overall), and currently are in second place in Division II. After reaching the playoffs in 2022 for the first time since 2013, William Floyd is well-positioned for another playoff appearance later this season.
Additionally, junior guard Kayla Gilmore, recently broke the school record for most points scored in a game with 51, in a 66-34 victory over Riverhead over the winter break. She surpassed the previous girls record held by Maggie Makofsky (42 points in 2000) and the boys record held by Robert Hodgson (47 points in 1994). Kayla gave the credit to her teammates.
