On Wednesday, April 3, a house caught fire on Astor Drive in Sayville, where a good Samaritan rescued a resident from a second-story window.

Suffolk County Police Fifth Precinct officers responded to a 911 call reporting a fire at approximately 1:50 p.m. and told that one person was trapped in the home.

Upon police arrival, officers found a teenager had been rescued from the home by Richard Mosback, who was unable to enter the front door due to heavy smoke and flames and used a ladder supported by a second good Samaritan to escort the boy from his second-floor window. A dog was later found deceased in the residence.

Mosback was transported to an area hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

The resident of the home did not require medical attention.

Multiple fire departments, as well as the Town of Islip fire marshal responded. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it is believed to be non-criminal.

A GoFundMe was created for the Spitzfaden family and shared heavily on social media.

As of time of print, $73,457 had been raised towards the $100,000 goal from 976 donations.

In addition, St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sayville held a collection on Sunday, April 7 for gift cards and cash to be given to the family.

Sadly, the family dog perished in the fire.
