UPDATED: Bus driver arrested in North Bellport crash

Suffolk County Police today arrested a school bus driver following a motor vehicle crash in North Bellport. 

Fifth Precinct officers responded to a motor vehicle crash involving a school bus and a sedan on Bellport Avenue and Head of the Neck Road at approximately 7:50 a.m. There was a driver, an aide, and five children, ages 10 to 14, on the bus. The driver of the bus, the driver of the sedan and the five children were transported to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries. The aide was not injured. 

The bus driver refused to allow medical personnel to evaluate the children aboard the bus and was then involved in an altercation with police at the scene. He was arrested and charges are pending. 

UPDATE: Suffolk County Police charged Steven Edwards 64, with five counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, two counts of Obstruction of Governmental Administration, Harassment and Resisting Arrest. Edwards was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries suffered in the crash. He was issued a Desk Appearance Ticket.
