Bellport’s Alex Vargas, 24, will spar in his next bout this weekend at The Paramount in Huntington. He will perform on Saturday night in one of the undercard matches of Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing “Rockin’ Fights” 37.
This is Vargas’s fifth professional fight, and he’s kept a 4-0 record for the more than one year he’s been in the pro game. Vargas told the Advance he’s excited to keep fighting and he has had some great opponents from the local area.
Vargas started fighting as a child with his dad, who still works with him today. At 10 years old, he won a competition with the Junior Olympics. At Bellport High School, Vargas played football and wrestled but eventually made his way back to boxing in 2013, his senior year. That year he won the New York Golden Gloves championship, a title that he fought for again this year, making the finals. Between those two tournaments, he attended Suffolk County Community College and SUNY Cortland, where he earned a degree in teaching English as a second language.
“I’m excited to fight another undefeated fighter and show people what I can do,” Vargas said.
Vargas’s opponent is Dashaun “TooSweet” Johns, of the Bronx, who has a 2-0 record. For tickets, visit www.paramountny.com
