Veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces from across Suffolk County were honored for their service and sacrifice in helping to protect our freedom and liberty. Each of the 18 members of the Suffolk County Legislature introduced a veteran as “Veteran of the Year” from their district at November’s General Meeting of the Legislature in the Rose Caracappa Auditorium of the William H. Rogers Legislative Building.
Suffolk County is home to the largest population of veterans in New York State and has one of the largest veterans’ populations of any county in the United States.
Legis. Steven J. Flotteron recognized William F. Murray for the Veteran of the Year Appreciation Month for the 11th Legislative District, for his outstanding service to his country and contributions he has made to his community.
Murray served in the United States Army as a communication center specialist 4th class, from 1963 to 1966, stationed in Korea and Germany. He is a life member of Amvets Post 76 Bay Shore, serving as two-time past commander from 2016 to 2017 and 2018 to 2019, member of American Legion Post 365 Bay Shore and life member, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7279 Lindenhurst. He is a member of Islip Town, Suffolk County, and New York State Firematic organizations serving in past officer positions. Murray’s community service includes: being a 62-year active member of the Bay Shore Fire Department, serving as past chief from 1987 to 1989 and commissioner from 2012 to present; past president from 1998 to 1999, Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division 1, Bay Shore; Suffolk County aide to grand marshal, NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 1998; charter member of Bay Shore St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee; and member of Bay Shore Historical Society and BS Brightwaters Memorial Day Committee.
