Chaos erupted just before 2 a.m. the morning of Sunday, Nov. 3, when fires were intentionally set outside by those attending an illegal street race event, according to the Islip Fire Department.
Both the Islip Fire Department and the Suffolk County Police department were dispatched when the gathering of over 100 people and their cars blocked traffic on Commack Road at the Sunrise Highway overpass, prompting multiple 911 calls.
As the police attempted to disperse the numerous vehicles, multiple collisions were caused by reckless fleeing.
According to the SCPD, a Third Precinct officer was involved in a motor vehicle crash, striking a pole while attempting to avoid a person in the roadway, on westbound Sunrise Service Road, near Commack Road. When the officer exited his vehicle, he attempted to stop a Mustang that was recklessly driving in circles at the intersection of Commack Road and westbound Sunrise Service Road.
The Mustang fled the scene and was then involved in a crash with another vehicle at Commack Road and Wallace Street, Suffolk police shared. The driver of the Mustang fled the scene on foot, while the driver of the other vehicle was not injured.
Following the crash, a substantial oil leak from the vehicle caused the Mustang to catch fire, prompting the Islip Fire Department to call out for the Town of Islip Hazmat team and NYS DEC.
Suffolk police also shared that while the officer was out of his vehicle at Commack Road and westbound Sunrise Service Road, at least three tires on his vehicle were slashed.
Another Third Precinct officer responding to the scene was involved in a motor vehicle crash, into a pole, during the chaotic fleeing on eastbound Sunrise Service Road, east of Griffing Street.
There were yet two more motor vehicle crashes involving vehicles fleeing the area, according to the SCPD and Islip Fire Department. A car struck a telephone pole on West Pine Street and Whitman Avenue in Islip and the driver fled on foot. Another vehicle struck a tree on westbound Sunrise Service Road and Pond Road in Bohemia. The driver was issued multiple traffic summonses.
Both officers involved in their individual accidents were treated and released from a local hospital.
