PATCHOGUE VILLAGE

So this is what it’s come to…

Threats and rude remarks to a pastor whose church is ringing a bell for each person who died of the COVID virus. That means honoring mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, children, health care workers, police, firefighters, colleagues, neighbors and others who died was objectionable to some.

Why is a mystery.

There was even a threat to ring the bell ringer’s neck.

When Pastor Dwight Wolter of the Congregational Church of Patchogue decided to do this, it was timed to coincide with All Soul’s Day, honoring those who passed. And he took care to mute the bell ringing, it was recorded, then looped to control the volume, every six seconds.

So those who objected didn’t want to be reminded, we guess. Really? Is it because you don’t think these people really died from the pandemic because there are news outlets who record the deaths of those who died from COVID in each hamlet and village daily.

Church bells can be a symbol of joy, but also solemnity. When 9/11 hit, there were churches who rang bells in honor of those lives lost.

So what are you afraid of when you object? That your “rights” are threatened if you wear a mask? That it’s not a pandemic?

Or the truth?
