The Sayville Golden Flashes hosted the Eastport-South Manor Sharks for the first round of the Suffolk County Division III playoffs last week.

No. 1-seeded Sayville (8-0) faced No. 8-seeded Eastport South-Manor (3-5) last Friday night, with the rights to go to the Suffolk County semifinals on the line.

After the Sharks made a three and out on the game’s opening drive when they punted it, they sailed into their own end zone for a safety for two points.

Up 2-0 on Sayville’s first play from scrimmage, Kyle Messina ran for a first down to move the chains. Subsequently, Patrick Coan heaved a 34-yard touchdown toss to Tomas McCann and on the ensuing PAT (point after touchdown) by Nick Watson it was 9-0 Golden Flashes, not even two minutes into the game.

On the Sharks’ next possession, they fumbled, and it was recovered by Sayville at midfield. Messina then ran 34 yards deep into ESM territory; then Coan slung a touchdown hurl to Mikey Sands for 10 yards, then followed by another successful PAT by Watson, and it was 16-0 Sayville.

Shortly afterwards, Donovan Bartolotta made an interception, and Sayville got the ball back.

Messina ran two yards for six points and Watson kicked it through the uprights again and it was 23-0. With 23 seconds left in the opening quarter, Sayville scored again when Patrick Coan lobbed a 42-yard touchdown strike to Tomas McCann.

Dylan Kent made an interception on the defensive side of the ball, then No. 9 Kyle Messina ran nine yards for six points. Sayville continued to pour it on when Mikey Sands made an interception, then sprinted all the way to the end zone for a pick six.

ESM punted into their own end zone, resulting in another safety for Sayville and it was 46-0 in the second quarter. Messina continued to carry the ball like a locomotive and rushed 13 yards for a score, once again ensued by a Watson PAT, and the Flashes were shining brightly under the lights on Greene Avenue as they led 53-0.

That score was upheld at halftime. On the opening drive of the third quarter, Tristan Vitale rushed like a freight train, dashing 65 yards for a touchdown and it was 59-0.

The final score was Sayville 59, ESM 13. Sayville will host Westhampton Beach Tuesday night for the Suffolk County semifinals.
