Bellport Bay Yacht Club recently hosted the Great South Bay Yacht Racing Association JR Doublehanded Championship for the Patin Trophy, squaring off against teams from Sayville Yacht Club, Moriches Yacht Club, Point of Woods Yacht Squadron and West Hampton Yacht Squadron. Scoring the first-place slot was the Sayville Yacht Club team of Terrance Byrnes and Finn Capozzi. Bellport’s top three teams racked up the sixth, seventh and eighth-place spots, as well as 11th, 14th and 15th place.
The race had a late start, due to wind conditions. “This sport is very weather-reliant,” said Zach Runci, race team coach, Bellport Bay Yacht Club.
Sixteen race teams competed in the regatta, as family, friends and onlookers enjoyed the competition. “I’m retired now, but any day sailing is better than a day at work,” said Al Guardino, president of the Great South Bay Yacht Racing Association, who is also a member of the Bellport Bay Yacht Club.
