Prominent yield sign at village crosswalk

New sign to calm the traffic

A Yield to Pedestrian in Crosswalk sign in the middle of South Country Road between North and South Howells Point Road will be a regular fixture soon.

“It’s anchored on a hard rubber 2-by-3-foot stand,” said Bellport mayor Ray Fell. “We’re placing it in the middle of the crosswalk.”

The sign is there to stay, except during winter when village plowing is done. While Fell said the village hadn’t received complaints, there were concerns.

“It’s another way to provide a safe environment for children and adults, and it’s something the village board felt as a measure to protect the people of Bellport,” he said.

Fell commented a second advantage. Besides being a reminder, the sign would hopefully slow down passing drivers that speed there.

“There’s a school crossing guard there in the morning and afternoon” during the school year, he said.

If it’s successful, “we’ll place another one across to Academy Lane,” he said of the area across from Citarella’s.
