Suffolk County police arrested a Bay Shore man for leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash that killed a pedestrian on Main Street in Bay Shore on March 8.
While attempting to cross Main Street near Shore Lane at 2:10 a.m., 52-year-old Eric Perez of Bay Shore was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. Perez was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
The fatal crash took place just hours before the Bay Shore-Brightwater’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade proceeded off down Main Street.
Following an investigation, Major Case Unit detectives charged Alexander Cerda, 21, of Bay Shore, with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash involving a fatality, grand larceny in the third degree and criminal mischief in the third degree.
During his arraignment on March 13 at First District Court in Central Islip, Cerda pleaded not guilty to all charges. After his bail was set to $200,000 cash or $800,000 insured bond, Cerda posted bail.
To help combat the unexpected burden of funeral costs, a GoFundMe was arranged by Perez’s stepson, Jose Colon, on behalf of his mother, Gina Perez.
“Eric was a father, husband, brother, stepfather, and soon-to-be grandfather,” wrote Colon. ”Eric was a great man who would help anyone in need and would do anything for those he loved.”
