The William Floyd boys basketball team ended its season Sunday with a 57-40 loss to No. 1-seed Half Hollow Hills East in the Suffolk AAA championship game.
The game was played at Farmingdale State College before a near sellout crowd, many of whom came to root on the Colonials, who were a No. 3 seed.
Floyd was ahead 24-20 at halftime, but Hills East outscored the Colonials 37-16 in the second half for the win.
“The second half, it seemed like we had nothing left in the tank,” Colonials head coach Will Slinkosky said.
The Colonials’ appearance in the championship game ended an emotional season for the team, which lost assistant coach Darrell Sumpter, who died in an automobile accident in December.
The Colonials finished the season at 19-4, ending what Slinkosky called “a very good season,” in which his team “did everything they were supposed to do.”
“We accomplished a lot,” he said. “We did a lot on the floor. We did a lot off the floor. We fought through adversity. We just came up short. Not everything can be a fairy tale and Disney movie. We ran into a very, very, very good opponent. I love my team. I love everything they’ve accomplished this year. I can’t say enough about them.”
Dahmarion Moses led Floyd with 19 points. Jawuan Smith scored 11 points and JJ Smith added eight points for the Colonials.
