William Floyd High School recently held its second Career and Technical Education (CTE) Signing Day, highlighting the 70 students who intend to continue along their CTE Pathway, whether by entering directly into the workforce, or continuing their education in a technical program or in college.

During the ceremony, students were recognized individually and then by CTE Academy, and commemorated the occasion by signing a non-binding certificate of commitment to their future along with a CTE Signing Day poster for a high school 

“This is a pretty special group. We have 70 students [this year] that have gone through one of our CTE programs and now are headed into the industry or college to continue their pathway for what they have studied here,” said Robert Felicetta, assistant principal, William Floyd High School, at the signing ceremony. This year, approximately 84 students will earn a CTE endorsement on their diplomas.

Speaking to the students, Felicetta added, “You have had one of the most interesting rides as high school students. I remember speaking to you all about some ‘crazy idea’ of joining a CTE program. Many of you took that opportunity and joined one, only to find out a month later that school would be shut down due to a pandemic,” he said. “You made really important strides for your careers during a time in which it was very difficult. I hear the quote ‘Floyd Strong’ quite often, but for this group, I think it’s ‘Floyd Tough.’”

At William Floyd, juniors and seniors have the opportunity to enroll in academy-style programs for a block of two to three periods each day based on the program of study, including: Automotive Technology, Barbering, Business, Cosmetology, Home Design and Construction (carpentry), Hospitality Services (culinary arts), Medical Assisting, and two new offerings next year, Certified Personal Trainer & Nutritionist, and Marine & Motorsports. 

The William Floyd High School CTE program is in full swing, with more than 350 more students who have expressed interest in enrolling in a CTE course for next school year. The CTE endorsement provides the opportunity to gain entry-level employment in various capacities including as a medical assistant, an automotive technician, an entry-level carpenter, carpenter’s apprentice or carpenter’s helper and as a licensed cosmetologist. Students can also earn college credits for post-secondary education in the culinary arts, earn endorsements in business (accounting, business management, Microsoft Office specialist) and in technology (architecture and engineering). William Floyd High School CTE is helping to build the skills necessary for students to be career and college-ready and have the extra skills and know-how they can take with them throughout their lives.
