Winning entries for our Fourth of July photo submission contest
The Long Island Advance held a photo submission contest for the Fourth of July, “Families for Flags,” where our readers sent in pictures of their loved ones with Old Glory.
The winners were asked what being American meant to their family.
Our front-page selection is Josephine, 5, of Patchogue, who said, “Being American means seeing the American flag and seeing the president. Oh, and singing the song where we put our hands over our hearts and being proud to sing it!”

Our second-place winner for the Fourth of July “Families for Flags” photo submission contest was Maisey, 1 and 1/2, of Patchogue, who thinks “being an American is freedom! Being free to eat as many bones and run free on the beach!”
