On Sunday, Sept. 10, at around 7:30 p.m. in the evening, power went out in the Idle Hour neighborhood in Oakdale, after three power wires began sparking following an alleged squirrel attack. The West Sayville Fire Department was on-site almost immediately to secure the area, and PSEG confirmed that power was restored to the community around 9:30 p.m.
“When we arrived on the scene, we secured the area. Thankfully, there were no hanging power lines in the vicinity,” said West Sayville Fire Department chief, Brian D’Onofrio.
Although community members confirmed that the squirrel was responsible for the fire, D’Onofrio said this was unconfirmed, but offered that “it’s possible. But sometimes birds and squirrels are just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
