Students at Cordello Elementary School in Central Islip received a surprise guest on March 17. Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, former member of the well-known hip-hop band Run-D.M.C., read his book, “Darryl’s Dream,” to students. There was perfect attendance, after having to cancel two previous times due to inclement weather and McDaniels’s attendance at the Grammys.
McDaniels’s picture book was published in January 2022 and tells the story of Darryl, a third grader who is shy. “Darryl’s Dream” shares a message of confidence, facing your bullies and appreciating yourself. McDaniels read as part of the PARP – Pick a Reading Partner program, where students are encouraged to read at least 15 to 20 minutes a day with a guardian of their choosing.
Cordello Elementary School principal Dr. Nathaniel Marner introduced Shawnee Warfield and Johnny Warfield as co-authors of the book. Shawnee Warfield was unable to attend, but sent a warm welcome to students via video, sharing ways of how to pick a reading partner.
Johnny Warfield sat to read before asking students who he should call to be his PARP. He called McDaniels, who said he could step in and read aloud. Students in grades K-6 gathered in the gymnasium and cheered as McDaniels walked in.
“I came here this morning to read with my friend Mr. Warfield because I wrote a book, and the name of that book is ‘Darryl’s Dream,’” McDaniels said. “I wrote this book for two reasons: to let every kid, every child know that they are perfect just the way they are, regardless of what anybody says.”
At the end of his book, McDaniels read “Darryl’s Rap,” which is featured in the last page. The rap consists of pieces he wrote when he was in elementary school, to when he established his career as a music artist. What he wrote in his childhood came true in his later years with his success in the music industry.
Before heading out, McDaniels shared a few final words of encouragement with students on how they can make their own rap.
“All of you in this room have everything necessary for you to succeed, no matter what anybody says,” McDaniels said. “At one time I didn’t believe in magic, but I found out magic exists, and you are the ones that can do all the magic, wonderful, incredible, awesome, magnificent things that you want to do.”
Marner, who has known the Warfields for over 10 years, presented an award to Johnny and Shawnee Warfield for their commitment to the students of the Central Islip School District. He also presented McDaniels with an award for sharing his time, commitment ,and valuable life lessons with students.
