Sayville High School alum Jack Coan made quite a debut in his first game for Notre Dame, leading the No. 9 Fighting Irish to a 41-38 win in overtime over Florida State.
Coan, a graduate transfer from Wisconsin, set the program record for Notre Dame in a season-opening game with 366 passing yards and tied the program record for touchdowns with four.
“I think it was a little too exciting for my liking,” Coan said postgame of win that featured seven lead changes. “I would have liked to win by a little more. Something like that is pretty stressful, but it was amazing, and it was definitely something I’ll always remember.”
Coan’s transfer from Wisconsin was a bit of a full-circle experience, as he had originally committed to playing lacrosse there as a freshman in high school.
“It’s definitely extremely emotional,” Coan said. “It’s a dream come true for me and my family to play for this university, playing in an iconic place for college football like this and to get a win like that. It’s unbelievable and I’m so thankful for it.”
At the end of the third quarter, Notre Dame (1-0) had a comfortable 18-point lead, but the Seminoles clawed their way back in the fourth to tie the game up at 38. After Florida State (0-1) missed their 37-yard field goal in overtime, the Fighting Irish were able to clinch the win with a 41-yard field goal by Jonathan Doerer.
“I trusted him,” Coan said of Doerer. “He’s our guy and I knew he was going to knock it through, and he did, so unbelievable job by him.”
Next up for Notre Dame is their home opener against Toledo at 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 11. The game will be streamed on Peacock.
