Celebrating community during West Islip’s homecoming

Posted

The West Islip community lined both the streets for the parade and the bleachers of West Islip High School for the football game as they gathered to celebrate homecoming on Oct. 8.

In the week leading up to homecoming, West Islip High School students and staff held themed days for spirit week. On the day before the game, the school gathered for a pep rally, and homecoming royalty was officially announced.

To kick off the homecoming day celebrations, a dedication ceremony was held at Udall Road Middle School in honor of longtime West Islip educator Harold “Hal” Anderson. The parade began just a few hours later at Westbrook Elementary School as the cheerleaders, youth football players, marching band and homecoming class floats made their way down Higbie Lane to West Islip High School. This year’s class float theme was “through the decades,” and the senior class took home the award for best float with their ‘80s theme.

The West Islip Lions faced off against the Lindenhurst Bulldogs for what proved to be a great matchup. Despite their best efforts, the Lions couldn’t top the Bulldogs, coming up a few points short of a victory.

Keeping the crowd entertained for the halftime show, the West Islip High School marching band performed alongside the Color Guard. Next up, the West Islip High School kickline was in sync for their routine, and the varsity cheerleaders showed off their skills to close out the show.
