Detectives from the Suffolk County SPCA charged two Bohemia women who abandoned a black cat at South Denver Avenue in Bay Shore.
Roy Gross, chief of the Suffolk SPCA, said that its detectives charged Jillian Fitzpatrick, 43, and Janine Albrecht, 69, of Bohemia, with one count each of abandonment and conspiracy for abandoning Rocky, a 6-year-old male cat, on July 10 at 3:55 p.m.
The defendants abandoned Rocky at the end of South Denver Avenue in Bay Shore within a few hundred feet of the defunct Town of Islip Animal Shelter that was replaced with a new building several years ago.
The two were interrupted by a good Samaritan who contacted the SPCA and has since been caring for the cat, which most recently underwent multiple surgeries, including the removal of one eyes, on Aug. 17.
The good Samaritan has also indicated they will adopt Rocky as soon as he is healthy enough to come to a forever home.
Albrecht and Fitzpatrick were arrested on Aug. 27, 2023, by SPCA detectives and are scheduled to appear at First District Court in Central Islip, on Sept. 15.
“Animal cruelty will not be tolerated in Suffolk County.” Gross said.
Residents are asked to report incidents of animal cruelty or neglect to the Suffolk County SPCA at (631) 382-7722.
Over 3,000 cases of animal abuse were reported in Suffolk County in 2022.
The Suffolk County SPCA is a local, independent not-for-profit organization that has been servicing the humane needs, requirements, and enforcement of cruelty laws for Suffolk County, N.Y., animals since 1984.
